Position Summary:
Under close supervision, the Apprentice will assist with and facilitate various job assignments to learn the skills and responsibilities of a Crane Technician. You will receive training on how to complete inspections, conduct maintenance and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems to ensure the safe and efficient operation of Port Houston cranes.

The apprenticeship program is a combination of classroom hours and 8000 hours of paid, on-the-job training, lasting up to 5 years. Apprentices learn theory, mathematics, how to read blueprints and schematics, safety, and more.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Develop a broad range of mechanical and electrical skills needed to determine causes of equipment malfunction and restore it to OEM standards.
  • Learn and utilize all safety and environmental procedures in the execution of all duties and responsibilities associated with the Crane Technician position.
  • Work with Crane Technicians, Mechanics, and Electricians in the coordination of maintenance related activities with manager on duty during shift work.
  • Assist in the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of wharf and RTG cranes. Learn to diagnose problems and/or identify recurring malfunctions; provide recommended courses of action as technical knowledge and skills develop.
  • Study and learn electrical controls and circuits installed on Port Houston equipment.
  • Study and learn electrical medium voltage switchgear.
  • Support the diagnosis of electrical or mechanical problems through the use of appropriate equipment and tools such as voltmeters, hand tools, hoists, pressure gauges, drills, grinding wheels, and other tools common to each trade.
  • Assist with the installation of electrical controls and circuits for a variety of electrical equipment such as lighting systems, motors, and control cabinets.
  • Assist in the diagnosis and repair component parts of machinery including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, brakes, couplings, and other related crane parts.
  • Conduct time critical repairs and preventative maintenance on component parts.
  • Assist with the replacement of worn, defective, or damaged equipment, using appropriate equipment and tools such as multimeters, conduit benders and other tools common to the trade; interpret blueprints, sketches, and drawings to support the installation and troubleshooting of electrical equipment.
  • Review and interpret factory manuals and blueprints as required to fulfill job assignments.
  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours.
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by management.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Education/Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required

  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
